World War I: 1914–1918

Members of the Forces of New Zealand and the now-Commonwealth countries, who served overseas or at home between 4 August 1914 and 31 August 1921. Included are service personnel who were attested for overseas service but did not proceed overseas, New Zealand personnel who served in Home Service Units between 4 August 1914 and 31 August 1921, and those who served in the Merchant Navy in the waters of a war zone.

World War II: 1939–1945

Members of the New Zealand and Commonwealth Forces, who served overseas or at home between 3 September 1939 and 31 December 1947. Included are New Zealand personnel who were attested for overseas service but did not proceed overseas, New Zealand personnel who served in Home Service Units between 3 September 1939 and 31 December 1947, and those who served in the Merchant Navy in the waters of a war zone.

Occupation of Japan

Members of the New Zealand and Commonwealth Forces, who served with Occupation Forces in Japan between August 1945 and March 1949.

Berlin Airlift

Members of the New Zealand and Commonwealth Forces, who flew in the Berlin Airlift between 1 September 1948 and 11 August 1949. 

Korean War

Members of the New Zealand and Commonwealth Forces, who served in Korea, or in Korean waters, between 27 June 1950 and 27 July 1957.

India-Pakistan

Members of the New Zealand Armed Forces who served in the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) and the United Nations India-Pakistan Observation Mission (UNIPOM) between January 1952 and 31 March 1974.

Suez Crisis

Members of the crew of HMNZS Royalist who served in the Suez Crisis between 29 October and 5 November 1956.

United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO)

Members of the New Zealand Armed Forces who served in the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) in Palestine-Israel from July 1954 onwards and those who served in the following detachments:

  • United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) in Jerusalem and Sinai in 1956–57
  • United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF I) in 1956–57
  • the United Nations Observer Group Lebanon (UNOGIL) in 1958

Malayan Emergency, Confrontation with Indonesia, Operations on the Thai Malay Border

Members of the New Zealand and Commonwealth Forces who served in the Federated States of Malaya, Borneo or surrounding waters between 16 June 1948 and 31 December 1966 as part of the Malayan Emergency or Indonesian Confrontation (Borneo). Personnel who served in operations on the Thai/Malay Border against communist insurgents between 1960 and 1964 are also eligible.

Vietnam War

Members of the New Zealand and Australian Armed Forces, who served in Vietnam or in Vietnamese waters between 24 December 1962 and 24 December 1972.

Thailand

Members of the New Zealand and Commonwealth Forces who served in Thailand in support of Operation Scorpion, Special Logistic Aid Thailand (SLAT) programme, Operation Crown and Thailand Feeder Road project, between 1962 and 1971.

Mururoa Atoll

Members of the crew of HMNZS Otago and HMNZS Canterbury sent to observe French nuclear tests at Mururoa Atoll on 22 and 28 July 1973.

Rhodesia

Members of the New Zealand and Commonwealth Forces who served in the Commonwealth Monitoring Force (CMF) in Rhodesia (Operation Midford) between 23 December 1979 and 5 March 1980.

Sinai

Members of the New Zealand Defence Force who served with the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) in the Sinai Peninsula from 25 April 1982 to the current day.

Indian Ocean

Members of the crew of HMNZS Waikato and HMNZS Canterbury who served in Operation Armilla in the Indian Ocean between 21 June 1982 and 20 September 1983.
